Why Men and Women Face Hair Fall Differently?

The growing society has come to believe that men and women should be treated equally. But we cannot defy the fact that a man and a woman are different in so many ways. Let us discuss Why Men and Women Face Hair Fall Differently?

The sex hormones

To begin with, their sex hormones. Men produce testosterone while women produce estrogen. Now, testosterone in male affects hair fall. More the level of testosterone, the more will be the hair loss. But estrogen and progesterone in female maintain the hair thickness and keep them in the growing phase. But after menopause plays its part, the estrogen supply is naturally inhibited. Many of us forget that female body too has testosterone produced in very small quantities along with other sex hormones. So while estrogen stops, testosterone does not and thus becomes more concentrated and starts causing hair fall in women too. Inflammation may play a larger role in this condition in women than for men.

So you see, women have a boon here. But if they keep torturing their hair with straightening, smoothening, curling, colouring and all sorts of other styling, they are much likely to damage their hair and eventually lose them faster.

By product of testosterone - DHT

Dihydrotestosterone (DHT) is the sensitive by-product of testosterone, or androgen, and a fairly powerful male sex hormone that shrinks hair follicles. DHT can also make it take longer for your follicles to grow new hairs once old hairs fall out. The effect of DHT differs from person to person depending on the variations in their androgen receptor (AR) gene. Interestingly DHT is also an important hormone for hair growth in other areas of the body like the chest and back.

Pattern of baldness

The balding process can fast or slow depending from person to person. Men and women get bald differently. They both undergo different stages of hair loss.

First, the growing phase slows down and the follicles start shrinking, They start to become thinner and weaker. Normally. Women lose 50 – 100 hair per day. But for the one going bald, they lose far more. Woman are less likely to go completely bald, but may have a lot of thinning throughout your hair.

Female Baldness-

Female pattern baldness can be majorly divided into three –
1st - small amount of thinning starts
2nd - involves widening of the part, and increased thinning around it.
3rd - thinning throughout, with a see-through area at the top of your scalp.

Male baldness -

According to the American Hair Loss Association, 95 percent of hair loss in men is caused by androgenetic alopecia. With male pattern baldness, hair loss typically occurs on the top and front of the head.
1st – no hair loss
2nd - Minor recession at the front and some temporal recession.3rd - Temporal recession deepens.
4th - enlargement of the bald patch at the crown.
5th - Bald area in the front enlarges and starts joining the bald area at the crown.
6th- 8th – Progressive balding
