Types of breast implants
Now that we know about breast implants, let’s talk about the types of breast implants:
There are mainly two types of breast implants – Saline and Silicone breast implants.
Saline breast implants
Saline
filled breast implants contain a silicone outer shell filled with a sterile saltwater (saline) solution. Some are pre-filled and others are filled during the implant operation. Saline implants have been used since the 1960s. In saline implants, the outer shell is made out of silicone, but the shell inserted is empty. The shell is then filled with saline water.
Pros-
⦁ Silicone-based implants are very safe for the body.
⦁ In the case of ruptures, the saline will be safely absorbed by the body.
⦁ Ruptures are easy to detect
⦁ Requires a small incision since the implants are not pre-filled.
⦁ Is approved if you are aged 18 or older
⦁ Less expensive
Cons-
⦁ Does not feel as natural as silicone-based implants
⦁ Feels much heavier
⦁ Ruptures are more likely to happen than silicone breast implants
Silicone breast implants
Silicone gel-filled breast implants have a silicone outer shell that is filled with silicone gel. They are known for being thicker and firmer than breast implants with traditional silicone gel. Silicone-filled breast implants were invented in 1961, first implanted in 1962.
Pros-
⦁ Silicone-based breast implants are softer to feel and look much more natural than saline-based breast implants
⦁ Your breast will retain its shape even if the implants leak
⦁ Is approved for women aged 22 or older
⦁ They are less likely to ripple
Cons-
⦁ Is very expensive
⦁ A bigger incision is required because the implants are pre-filled
⦁ The biggest disadvantage with silicone breast implants is that if it ruptures, it may not be immediately noticeable
