Premature Balding: Why Do Teenagers Get Bald?
Hair loss has always been a stressful topic to deal with, for all age groups. And when it comes to teenagers, the stress is so much more magnified. Balding or major hair loss is something that is usually associated with ageing. Let us discuss Premature Balding: Why Do Teenagers Get Bald?
Causes of Premature balding:
Balding in teenagers can be of many reasons. The most common is hereditary. Male pattern baldness is usually a result of your gene inheritance. Although male pattern baldness usually shows in the adult or young adult stage, there are cases of teenage balding too. But balding does not have to be always related to hereditary. There is plenty of harm we are inflicting on our body that might be the ultimate factor to result in this.
Stress is another common factor that might cause balding or excessive hair loss. Stress can lead to several conditions like Alopecia Areata, Telogen Effluvium and Trichotillomania.
- Alopecia Areata is a condition where there is a gradual loss of hair over time or sudden losses of clumps of hair.
- Telogen Effluvium causes more hair than the normal count to fall out.
- Trichotillomania is when stress causes a person to pull out hair, sometimes without even realising it.
Poor nutrition and diet habits are a major contributor to balding. Eating junk, unhealthy and greasy food in the long run can deprive the body of its much-needed nutrients. Eating on irregular timings also confuse the body’s daily function. Many teenagers have eating disorders like anorexia or bulimia that might lead to extreme starvation or binge eating and ultimately resulting in hair and weight problems.
Medical conditions like uncontrolled diabetes, thyroid conditions, lupus and hormonal conditions like PCOS or PCOD in girls are also causes of hair loss. Sometimes, the medications prescribed also have hair loss as a side effect. Diet pills, chemotherapy, birth control pills or dialysis can have a major effect on hair.
Smoking and alcohol can also be a cause for balding or hair loss in teenagers. These addictives suck up the essential nutrients from the body and result in dehydration. Having these in moderation is always the best you can do for both your body and hair.
Having a healthy lifestyle can help to slow down the effect of balding or hair loss. Getting enough sleep, eating healthy, exercising, yoga, meditation and drinking plenty of water are some ways to lead a positive life.
It is best to start taking steps as soon as you encounter the signs of balding. Reach out to a doctor to get the best advice on how to treat your condition. Remember, hair is the crown that you will wear for a lifetime so good take care of it.
